Welcome!
The savage (Mine is an '87) is my first bike too. I just hopped on and rode for a year, but I took a riders safety course last month, which is worth the time and $$.
I know almost nothing about the bike. It seems to go. The only problem starting was a carbon fouled plug, which was a drag because you have to take the seat and tank off to get to it.
I recently put $400 in repairs (which you, no doubt, could have done yourself for $150), and the side panels have fallen off and need attention. The seat is also split. But I ride a lot and I really enjoy it. I don't think the bike overheats as long as it is moving.
Today I passed another Savage on the freeway, and he had custom paint and chrome decals on the tank. Hmmm.
I get about 100 miles to the gallon. Since there is no tripmeter, I fill up on the zeros, and thank God for the reserve. You may need it. It gives you about 10 or 20 miles to get more gas. The petcock is hard to reach when your bike sputters and coughs on the road, so keep the tank full.
Where are you from?
